What Sustains You?

At SustainableJC.org, we’d like to know, “What sustains you?”  We ask that question of ourselves quite often, and we encourage you to do the same, because the answers you come up with are unique to you.

Of course, there are some common themes, and with a 24 hour day that always seems too short, we at SJC have to prioritize.  To do that, we need your help (so we can help you!).

What gets you up in the morning? What motivates you?  What makes you feel good?  What connects you to the people you know, and the people you don’t know?  How do you interact with the natural environment and do you like it? Where do you find meaning in your life?  With your family, your friends, in your hobbies, in your work?

If you could make one change that would make your life better, what would it be?  A better commute?  More delicious food?  A fun way to get exercise?  A rewarding career?  More interesting and exciting entertainment choices?  Perhaps more spending money, and more stores you can walk to.  Or maybe just some time to relax, dig your feet into the sand, or climb a tree.

What do you need to make that change?  A few helpful tips?  Career training?  Some friendly people to do things with?  A local resource directory?  Some help from local government (like the new bike lanes that are planned)?

Sustainability isn’t sustainable unless it is fun for you, and it doesn’t hurt others (now or in the future).  It also shouldn’t damage the natural environment because that eventually hurts all of us (some sooner than later).  Our society has a number of habits that simply aren’t sustainable, so we need to find new ones (or revive old ones).  These habits shouldn’t be a sacrifice, they should be something that makes you, and everyone else, happier and more fulfilled.

So, what sustains you?
